Kyndryl Canada and Dyslexia Canada collaborate to boost literacy for dyslexic Indigenous youth

TORONTO, ON., December 12, 2024 -- Kyndryl (NYSE: KD), the world’s largest IT infrastructure services provider, is partnering  with Dyslexia Canada, the only national charity in Canada focused exclusively on supporting children with dyslexia.  Kyndryl will support Dyslexia Canada's decodable books project that seeks to provide 8,000 free decodable books to schools and libraries across the country. This book series is published by indigenous-owned and operated publisher, Strong Nations, and teaches children to read through Indigenous stories. Decodable books focus on teaching letter-sound combinations which are designed to teach children to read but are especially important for children with dyslexia who struggle with learning using the materials that have traditionally been used in the classroom.

Dyslexia is the most common cause of difficulties in learning to read, write, and spell.  It impacts between 10 and 20 percent of people, which equates to 750,000 kids in Canada.  Most children and young people with dyslexia are not receiving the support they need to succeed - 87% of the youth who are not in education, employment or training have a learning disability, mental illness or both; and only 26% of youth (15-29 years) with learning disabilities are employed compared with nearly 52% of all youth in this age range.

As a purpose-driven company, Kyndryl is dedicated to building an inclusive, sustainable future and powering progress for people and communities in Canada and around the world. This includes supporting social, economic and environmental initiatives where they can leverage their people and technology to make the greatest impact.  Kyndryl’s collaboration on this project reflects their deep commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity, as well as empowering its people and communities.

The collaboration between Kyndryl and Dyslexia Canada will invite children with dyslexia to learn basic reading, writing, and spelling skills that will empower them to continue in their education and achieve their goals. Additionally, Dyslexia Canada will provide opportunities for Kyndryl employees to learn more about dyslexia and the ways that they can help children, colleagues and community members with dyslexia be successful.
