The Near North District School Board has been a trailblazing board in Ontario with regard to the recommendations in the Right to Read report - screening, structured literacy. Joining us will be Kara Macie – Lead Speech Language Pathologist, Steve Krause and Christopher Walking – K-12 Student Achievement and Well-Being Principals.
In this episode of the Spotlight Series, the team will share some of the challenges and successes in implementation and their journey of implementation towards a district-wide adoption of literacy practices in alignment with the Science of Reading. They will also discuss their timeline of the work, intentional moves, resources used across the system, as well what they believe their next steps to be.
We will discuss the stepping stones identified such as:
Acknowledging the readiness and urgency
Appreciate the depth and complexity of this work
Build your experts; teacher voice along the way – including providing opportunities for vicarious and mastery experiences
Tapping into system expertise across department silos and the importance of classroom and school embedded professional learning.

Dyslexia Canada Spotlight Webinar Series
Across Canada educators and researchers are working together with the common goal of ensuring that every child can realize their right to read. Many schools have begun to implement early screening, evidence-informed classroom instruction, and early intervention. Educators in these schools say that the results of these changes have been transformative, both for students and teachers. Many more are curious about these practices but are unsure of what these changes look like in the classroom or how to get started.
In this ongoing series of webinars, we will be joined by Canadian educators and researchers who will share their stories of implementing these important changes. They will discuss both the challenges they have faced and the solutions that have allowed them to move forward and improve outcomes and equity for students.
Live participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of our guests and be entered into a prize draw. All sessions will be recorded and available for later viewing.
