BC Book Study: 7 Mighty Moves

Join Dyslexia Canada and other BC educators for this four-part book study where we will explore Lindsay Kemeny’s Seven Mighty Moves: Research-Backed, Classroom-Tested Strategies to Ensure K-To-3 Reading Success. From phonemic awareness to reading comprehension, this research-based book is ideal for K-3 educators. Come prepared to collaborate with other educators in these interactive, discussion-based meetings; share your insights on the chapter and discuss classroom applications.

Book Study dates and Topics:

  • October 7th

    • Introduction

    • Move 1: Teach Phonemic Awareness with Intention

  • October 21st

    • Move 2: Teach phonics explicitly and systematically

    • Move 3: Teach decoding strategies, not cueing strategies

  • November 4th

    • Move 4: Use decodable texts instead of predictable texts with beginning readers

    • Move 5: Embrace a better approach to teaching “sight words”

  • November 18th

    • Move 6: Focus on meaningful fluency practice

    • Move 7: Improve comprehension by developing vocabulary and background knowledge

All sessions are scheduled for 1 hour, beginning at 7:00 pm PST, and will run on Zoom.
