DESCRIPTION:New Brunswick educators are invited to join Dr. Una Malcolm and Jordan Sloan at the New Brunswick Teachers’ Association Council Day for two practical\, classroom-connected sessions focused on strengthening literacy instruction. \nUna’s session\, Beyond Grammar Worksheets: A Practical Approach with Sentence Combining\, explores how sentence combining can be used as a powerful instructional tool to build reading comprehension and writing across grades. Jordan’s French session\, La lecture répétée : un levier essentiel pour soutenir la littératie\, highlights repeated reading as an evidence-based approach to support fluency in French language contexts. \nWe’re looking forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:researchED Calgary
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Una Malcolm at researchED Calgary\, where she’ll share a talk\, What Works? Making Instructional Decisions from Research. \nEducators are expected to use evidence-based practice\, but that depends on understanding what research actually tells us about instruction. It’s not always straightforward. In this session\, we will look at how to read research with a sharper lens. What question was the study designed to answer? What can we actually conclude from the findings? What instructional decisions can we make? \nWe’ll unpack common misinterpretations\, including when studies about relationships or prediction get stretched into claims about what to teach. You’ll leave with a simple\, practical way to evaluate research and make instructional decisions that are grounded in the right kind of evidence.
